Driving our environmental goals
The newly completed 19 Street roundabout represents more than just an upgrade to our city's road infrastructure - it's a forward-thinking project aligned with the goals within The City of Red Deer's Environmental Master Plan, and 2023-2026 Strategic Plan.
This initiative began with the comprehensive rehabilitation of 19 Street. The project aimed not only to repair the roadway, but reimagined its role in better serving the community. Throughout 2021 and 2022, it was evident to all who traveled this route that improvements were sorely needed. Beyond the needs of motorists, local pedestrians and cyclists expressed a desire for safer and more efficient connectivity between residential areas and businesses.
How does a roundabout help the environment?
Roundabouts significantly reduce emissions and fuel consumption by minimizing idling times and maintaining a constant flow of traffic. Unlike traditional light-controlled intersections where idling vehicles contribute to air pollution, roundabouts maintain a constant flow of traffic. Traffic studies at the intersection and traffic modeling on the new roundabout design show an 80% reduction in overall delay at peak traffic times.
The benefits of the 19 Street roundabout extend beyond reduced traffic congestion. It features one of Red Deer’s first trail roundabouts, enhancing the multi-use trail network. This new structure connects the southeast residential areas to commercial areas, promoting walking and cycling. These routes provide a safer, more enjoyable way to explore Red Deer's extensive park system and access public transit.
The 19 Street roundabout isn't just a traffic solution; it's a gateway to a more connected and environmentally conscious community. As our city continues to grow, initiatives like the 19 Street roundabout are crucial in fostering a sustainable urban environment that prioritizes the well-being of its residents and the preservation of our natural spaces.
