The sky's the limit for Red Deer
The Red Deer Airport is little airport that could. After years of being the region's best kept secret, the announcement of the runway extension has got the community talking about all the exciting possibilities that lie ahead in 2016 and beyond.
"The runway extension means single aisle jets such as a 737 and Airbus A320 will now be able to land in Red Deer, and that opens up all kinds of exciting opportunities for the region – for individual travel as well as for local business development," says RJ Steenstra, CEO of Red Deer Airport. “The runway extension will help us attract a broader range of aircraft and airlines, improve passenger options, and also support the expansion of aviation-related business and industry in Red Deer and Central Alberta.”
The project is right on schedule; the engineering and design work began in early 2015, followed by the announcement in October 2015 that the expansion had been approved, thanks to funding from the Province of Alberta, The City of Red Deer and Red Deer County. Construction of the runway is scheduled to begin in May and is expected to be fully operational by October, 2016. There will be no disruption in service at the airport during the construction.
